Letter

Tonight we attended my son's High School Baseball Banquet. Steven earned his first varsity letter as a sophomore this year. He would have liked to have played more but he did contribute including getting a hit and scoring the game winning run against Satellite High School. We graduated 9 seniors off this team so I know he is counting on moving into the starting lineup next year. I hope his dream comes through for him.

As with most sports in high school, baseball is a year round sport. Since the last game, Steven has been lifting and they have their first “AAU practice” this coming Wednesday, the day after the last day of school.

I guess you might say his mother and I are proud of his dedication to this sport that he loves with all of his heart. Even more so, we’re proud of this dedication to the Lord in an environment that at times isn’t very Christian. However, tonight at the banquet the atmosphere was very much like a family and I was asked by the Head Coach to lead a prayer for the food. It was a nice start.

Comments:
Someone once said, dedication is not what others expect of you, it is what you can give to others. This is true, IMO.

It seems to me, however, that most young people who exhibit the characteristic of dedication, have absorbed this quality from the people in their lives.

Another old saying comes to mind: the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

Such good news. And to get rewarded for doing something you love doing anyway.

Instead of a guitar, by him a ticket to Switzerland (and come along). Room and board is way cheap.

BW - Thanks. The Coach did thank all of the parents for the job we had done in raising our kids. He said they were the easiest group to coach he had ever come across.

Greg - Nice thought. Is there any chance we can have Steven stay with someone else while we're in SoCal?

Brady - I would love to take you up on your offer. I'm already on record as one who admires European History not to mention one of it's
missionaries.

Please have SW see me at first opportunity at Bible camp so I can warn him about the evils of rock n roll and needle pushing steroid baseballers!

All seriousness aside: Congratulations! The first letter is a big step and would look good on his first resume next to his head jackin' ability to play the Les Paul gittar.

Here's a good start for you:

Here's praying that Steven continues to recognize what is truly important in life. Wisdom usually comes much later.

Not that there's anything wrong with baseball or guitars. Especially baseball.

Congrats to you and your son. I know you are a very proud daddy.

The pride we feel when our children explore, discover, grow and achieve . . . I am convinced is but a faint echo of the pride our Abba takes in us.

Shalom,
Bobby Valentine
